July 04 (Friday) – A trip to the Demilitarized Zone and the National Museum of Korea

It’s a drizzly day but we are off again this morning, this time to something truly unique to South Korea.  We are visiting the Demilitarized Zone, the no-mans land between North and South Korea.

Along the drive to/from Seoul there was a lot of fencing, barbed wire and lookout shelters.

First stop was to a tunnel that the North Korean’s had tried to dig from the North into the South.  It was discovered and quickly shut down.  Only a small portion of it can be visited.  We walked down the tunnel to as far as tourists can go 98 feet (30 meters) from the North Korean border.

Then we took a short drive to a nearby viewpoint.  Unfortunately, it was very rainy so the visibility wasn’t too good.  Part of the border travels along the Imjin River and we could see North Korea on the opposite bank.

Then it was off to a lovely, little restaurant with a beautiful front garden…

for another massive Korean meal.

On the way back...one of what seems like many skylines of Seoul.

Once back in Seoul, we stopped at the National Museum of Korea for a visit.  Beautiful, modern building.

A wide variety of artifacts.

Iron Seated Buddha

Royal Throne

Stone Rubbings

Sutra Painting

Because lunch was so late (we seem to be eating around 2:00) we opted to not do dinner and just have a dessert.  We have discovered bingsu, Korea’s answer to Hawaiian Shave Ice.  Mary tried the ripe persimmon, Jessica and Paul tried the red bean, and Liam had chocolate cake.  Great way to end the day.
