By mid-morning we were on our way to the airport to catch our flight to Mongolia. Check-in had a pretty long line but other than that it went smoothly.
We had time for some lunch. Turns out we didn’t need to do that as Mongolian Air had a nice meal on the plane.
We were met by our guide, Rainbow (her unpronounceable by us Mongolian name means Rainbow), and our driver, Miga (short for another unpronounceable Mongolian name) and were in the car in short order for the 30-mile drive into the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. The first half of the drive was pretty with green hillsides, small villages and grazing animals.
Once we hit the outskirts of Ulaan Baatar (the capital) the traffic closed in, and it was a mess. It took about three hours to go the last 15 miles. Rainbow said that the traffic was unusual because of people coming into town for the Naadam festival. Also, the Japanese Emperor and Empress are visiting, which would add to traffic.
We were all exhausted by the end of the drive. But the hotel is quite modern and comfortable so things will be good.
